IAHAIO 10th Triennial Conference 2004, Glasgow
October 6, 2004 - October 9, 2004
The 10th International Conference on Human-Animal Interactions was held on the 6th – 9th October 2004 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow, Scotland. It attracted about 500 delegates from all four corners of the world and a great deal of interest from many researchers and practitioners who submitted abstracts of presentations.
The following were the plenary presentations:
- Aubrey Manning (UK), The animals and ourselves: an outline of history.
- Manda Scott (UK), The animals and ourselves: present and future.
- Dr Ray Butcher (UK), Ethical challenges for the vet profession – a companion animal veterinary practitioner’s view.
- Kurt Kotrschal (Austria), More research or better PR? On the gap between knowing and doing in society.
- Dr Elizabeth Paul (UK), Understanding empathy with animals: a psychological perspective.
- Arnold Arluke (USA), Understanding the “no-kill” controversy: The role of surface and deep tensions in humane communities.
- Dr Cindy C. Wilson (USA), Human animal interactions (HAIs) and health: Best evidence.
- Dr Lynette A. Hart (USA), Community context affects the impact of pets on people.
The conference was judged by the delegates to be a great success, with over 60% rating all of the sections on the conference appraisals as very good or excellent.
The Conference was excellently hosted by SCAS ( Society of Companion Animal Studies) in the UK (then Director of SCAS)
