Membership categories

There are two membership categories within IAHAIO, based on the scope of activity of the organization within the field of human-animal interactions (HAI) and length of time the organization has been operating: affiliate membership and full membership.

All IAHAIO members enjoy a range of benefits. Importantly, IAHAIO encourages member participation in the development of its policies, position statements which help to shape policy and practice in the field.

All members must to agree to the Terms and Conditions of membership and pay an annual membership subscription fee.

Note: IAHAIO Membership is only open to organizations.  If you are an individual not affiliated to an organization, but have an interest in the field and want to support the work of IAHAIO, please consider becoming an Individual Supporter.  Typically, individual supporters may be students, researchers or individual practitioners who are not associated with or work for an organization, but want to keep up-to-date with the field and support the work of IAHAIO.

Affiliate membership

Membership is by application. The IAHAIO Board considers each application carefully against the criteria listed below. When submitting an application, please include evidence of your work and achievements and show how you are working towards best practice in the field.

Criteria

To be recognized as an affiliate member of IAHAIO, your organization must:

  • Be involved in one or more HAI or AAS-related activities that recognise the role of HAI in health and well-being, including:
      • Research
      • Programme delivery (eg animal-assisted education/animal-assisted activities with children)
      • Education, information and publications
      • Conferences and events
      • Policy development and influence (regional, national or international)
  • Have been in operation/active for at least 2 years
  • Have a clear organizational structure and governance
  • Have activities that support the goals and mission is IAHAIO

Terms and conditions

  • Adopt IAHAIO policies: The White Paper, Declarations, Position Statements and International Guidelines
  • Work towards best practices in the field eg follow IAHAIO guidelines for care, welfare and training of different species
  • Recognise IAHAIO’s complaints procedure
  • Payment of annual fee
  • Full terms available here

  • Monthly IAHAIO news update
  • Access to IAHAIO Facebook Closed Group
  • Access to online platform for members for collaboration and knowledge exchange (Coming soon July 2026)
  • Display of IAHAIO logo on materials, in accordance with the IAHAIO guidelines for use of logo
  • Access to all IAHAIO webinar recordings (archive)
  • Exclusive member-only webinars
  • IAHAIO endorsement and promotional support of member events/training (by application)
  • Discount rates at IAHAIO events and IAHAIO partner events and training
  • Attend and vote (1 vote) at IAHAIO Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Fees: An annual fee is payable for IAHAIO affiliate membership as follows:
Not-for-profit: 300 USD per annum
Commercial organizations: 2,500 USD (non-voting)

Full membership

Membership is by application. The IAHAIO Board considers each application carefully against the criteria listed below. When submitting an application, please include evidence of your work and achievements and show how you are working towards best practice in the field.

Criteria

To be recognized as a full member of IAHAIO, your organization must:

  • Have HAI or One Health as it relates to HAI and AAS (animal-assisted services) as its main focus
  • Have been in operation/active for at least 4 years
  • Be involved in at least 3 of the following activities:
    • Research
    • Programme delivery (eg animal-assisted education/animal-assisted activities with children)
    • Education, information and publications
    • Conferences and events
    • Policy development and influence (regional, national or international)
  • Be engaged with activities that support the goals/aims/objectives of IAHAIO
  • Have a clear organizational structure and governance

Commercial organizations: 3,000 USD (non-voting)

Individual supporter

If you are a student, an individual practitioner or researcher, or simply interested in the field and would like to support IAHAIO’s work, you might consider joining as an ‘Individual supporter’. Individual supporters are not associated or affiliated to an organization and so would not qualify to apply for Full or Affiliate membership. Becoming an individual support enables individuals to also be engaged in the field of HAI or AAS.

Individual supporters have access to:

  • IAHAIO’s archive of webinars
  • Discounts on IAHAIO events, including training courses
  • Regular news updates

Importantly, the individual supporter fee will help to support the work of IAHAIO.
